Applying for Graduation

GRADUATION FAQ

Where do I indicate the name I want on my diploma?
Be sure to update the name you want on your diploma in the Student Administration System. Also, be sure your diploma mailing address is correct in the system.

I have two majors. Will both appear on my diploma?
Yes. All majors will appear on your final diploma – minors will not. If the two majors are both BA majors or both BS majors, then the diploma will read what they truly are, such as “Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology”. If one major is a BS and one is a BA, then the system will default to a BS. If you are getting a dual degree, each major will appear on its own diploma.

I plan to have a minor. Do I need to inform the Registrar?
Yes. You will need to inform both your academic department and the Registrar if you plan to complete a minor. You may do this by submitting a Plan of Study (see below). Minors cannot be added to a degree after the degree is conferred.

Will minors appear on my diploma?
No. Minors will only appear on your official transcript.

I have an incomplete grade. When do I need to complete the grade to qualify for graduation?
If you want to be a December graduate, all incomplete grades must be submitted and posted on your transcript by mid-January, approximately four weeks after the end of the term. If you are a May graduate, all incomplete grades must be submitted by early June.

What should I do if I change my graduation semester?
If you want to change your graduation semester you must contact the Degree Auditors at (860) 486-6214.

Where do I submit my Plan of Study?
The Plan of Study is located at your academic department, must be signed by your advisor, and then turned into the Degree Auditors at the Registrar’s office. Some academic departments have different procedures, so please be sure to ask.
When do I submit my Plan of Study?
A Plan of Study must be submitted no later than the 4th week of the semester you plan to graduate (i.e. by the end of September for December graduates, by mid-February for May graduates). The Registrar recommends that August graduates submit their Plan of Study before the end of the spring semester as auditors sometimes take the summer off for research, travel, etc.
I have two majors. Do I need to submit a Plan of Study for both?
Yes. A Plan of Study must be submitted for every major and minor you want on your transcript. The Plan of Study must be submitted by the 4th week of the semester you plan to graduate.
Do I have to submit a Plan of Study for a minor?
Yes. A Plan of Study must be submitted for every minor you want reported on your official transcript.

When will I receive my diploma?
You will not receive your diploma at Commencement; the ceremony is purely a celebration of your accomplishment. You will receive your diploma in the mail approximately two months following your graduation. Please be sure to update your diploma mailing address in the Student Administration System.

What if I need a copy of my diploma immediately after graduation?
In special cases, we can expedite the mailing of your diploma. You can request this service by calling the Registrar at (860) 486-6214. However, if you only need proof of graduation the best method is to request an official transcript. The transcript will show your degree and will be available as soon as your final degree audit is complete.

Is there a Commencement for August and December graduates?
Commencement occurs once a year in May. December and August graduates may walk in the May Commencement. December graduates may walk in the May Commencement following their graduation and August graduates may walk in the May Commencement preceding their graduation.

I will finish my credits during Winter Intersession. Am I a December graduate or a May graduate?
If you complete your degree during Winter Intersession, you will be a May graduate.
I received a C- in one of my minor classes and want to drop my minor. Do I need to tell the Registrar?
You must earn a C or better in classes to receive a minor. If you wish to drop a minor because you received a C- in a class, you must tell the Registrar. If you have an unfinished, declared minor on your advisement report you will not graduate. You must notify the Registrar in writing that you will not take the minor.
I studied abroad during the Spring term of my senior year. Will I be a May graduate?
Unfortunately, study abroad credits can take a long time to transfer correctly to UConn; it is unlikely you will be a May graduate. Your final degree will most likely be awarded the following August.
